Seizing a Golden Opportunity:
Broward Education Foundation's Gold Opportunity Scholarship Recipient, Nicole Bumar
With over fifteen years of collaborating with educational institutions across the county, JDL Technologies joined forces with the Broward Education Foundation to provide an opportunity for one local Broward School System student to pursue a post-secondary education and to fulfill her dream. In August 2011, Ms. Nicole Bumar was awarded the Gold Opportunity Scholarship, donated by JDL Technologies, allowing her to enroll in a four year bachelor’s degree program at the University of Central Florida.
In search of a candidate with a balance between educational goals and interests within the community, Nicole was ideal. While in her senior year, Nicole took part in dual enrollment at Flanagan High School. This enabled Nicole to take two classes at Broward College as well as two classes at her local school. Although having an aggressive class schedule, Nicole ensured that she also had time to volunteer with Sharlene’s Angels on Earth and ride horses for fun.
With her focus to attend a college away from home, yet still in Florida, Nicole scheduled a visit to UCF. With just one visit, she fell in love with the campus. She applied, shortly thereafter receiving her acceptance and putting her plan into action. Upon beginning the 2011 school year, Nicole’s major was in education, much like her mother’s career; however, after further coursework and exploring options, Nicole has changed to a major in Public Administration, following in the footsteps of her father.
When asked about the Gold Opportunity Scholarship, Nicole commented, “It is and continues to be such a wonderful opportunity. Not only did this scholarship allow me to go to my first choice of universities, but also to clarify my major.” In sharing highlights of her first semester, Nicole added, “I have joined a sorority, which allows me to meet new friends as well as continue to do philanthropic activities and fundraising.”
JDL Technologies and the Broward Education Foundation are delighted to highlight Nicole’s successes in her first year at UCF. Along the horizon, Nicole plans to intern next summer with continued coursework in Public Administration and Criminology. Congratulations Nicole!
