Is Everyone a Candidate for Desktop Virtualization?

With so many virtual desktop technologies available, you may be asking yourself "Is everyone a candidate for desktop virtualization?" There is always concern about the user's reactions to losing their local computer. Can a virtualized desktop provide the same user experience?? At the same time, you have a gut feeling that there's money to be saved in desktop land...

The challenge is to bring your users the work environment that meets the needs of the user and the company while minimizing the cost to your company. To accomplish this it may be beneficial to categorize and group users.

Some common groups might be:
  • Power users: These employees typically need some unique feature(s) in their desktop computing environment (could be hardware or software related). This group could include engineers, cad operators, developers, etc.
  • Business function users: This includes folks who primarily use a particular application (or small set of applications). Examples are ERP users such as Customer Service, Inside Sales, Production, Planning, Purchasing, Payroll and Accounting. This group typically performs similar functions in an office setting. They rarely require computer access outside the office.
  • Mobile users: These employees are commonly off the corporate network and may work on the road via VPN or locally (no network connection). These are the folks carrying around laptops and smartphones. Think sales, field service, etc.

Once your users are categorized, the next task becomes matching the categories with the numerous Desktop Virtualization products available. JDL specializes in offering an independent view of multiple options and can help find the best fit for your application. Not all user categories are candidates for virtualization (but most are). In either case, JDL is happy to have a conversation about your virtualization ideas or questions and would like to invite you to our offices where you can take advantage of a "hands on" experience in our virtualization lab.
