Why Do I Need More Than One Monitor?
Recently, I worked on a project where every user was given dual monitors as part of their workstation setup. When we started the project installation, the most common reaction was, “Why do I need more than one monitor?”
Within days of the project being completed everyone who asked this question began to understand why their job suddenly seemed easier. They were able to complete tasks faster. This was across the board, and now those who initially questioned two monitors would not go back to one monitor.
What they were seeing is normal. There have been multiple studies that have investigated having dual monitors and/or larger monitors. The common thread in every single study has been large efficiency gains. One study from Microsoft showed that users can expect a productivity increase of between 9 and 50 percent. In a separate study, the New York Times found this increase to be between 20 and 30 percent. Another study from the University of Utah says that dual monitors and larger monitors helped to complete tasks up to 52% faster, saving the users up to 2.5 hours per day.
Over the last decade, the cost of monitors has dropped tremendously, while the size of the monitors has increased. This drop in price has made a dual monitor setup a very affordable option. The studies show that this has become a smart investment. If you are looking for a way to increase productivity and efficiency this should be at the top of the list.
